Exploring the Long and Storied History of FC Barcelona

The history of the FC Barcelona football team dates back over a hundred years; in fact, the very first squad was formed way back in 1899, which means that the team has touched history in three different centuries.Throughout that huge span of time, the team has continued to grow more popular and successful, and today, they are one of the most successful and storied sports teams in the world. Here we're going to take a look at the history of the club, but I'd definitely recommend that you buy Barcelona tickets and see them play the the Nou Camp.

Today, the club stands apart from almost all others throughout the world. The team motto, More than a Club, certainly stands as true, then. To many people in Catalonia, Barça represents not only their home city but the entire Catalan community, particulalrly when it comes to games against Real Madrid. Barcelona has 21 Spanish League titles to its name, as well as 11 UEFA competitions and 9 Spanish Supercups.

It all started out much more modestly though, back in 1899 with the Foot-Ball Club Barcelona, a group of a few players formed by Joan Gamper. The early years were nowhere nearly as successful, with just a few competitions to their name. However, the club was supported by the community, partially thanks to Catalan being its official language.

By 1909, the team started playing at the Camp de la Industria stadium, which had a 8,000 seat capacity. Just over a decade later, in 1922, the team moved to Les Corts, which had a capacity of 22,000. That was eventually extended to hold 60,000 spectators. That is still some way short of the Nou Camp though, which can currently hold 98,000.

Prior and after the civil war the club suffered, with the Catalan language and culture being banned, as FC Barcelona as an icon of Catalan nationalism being targetted. Players saw action on the front line, while in 1936 the club president was murdered. In 1943, with all displays of Catalan culture banned, the club won the first leg of a match against Real Madrid at home, then were intimidated by the dictator and lost the second leg 11-1.

After several decades of on and off again success, the team really began picking up to its current form by the early 1980s. From then on they have progressed to one of the world's best teams and have won trophy after trophy to prove it. If you're visiting Barcelona make sure you buy Barcelona tickets and see them for yourself.
